The Photograph
What you are seeing here is a part of the Big Bear dam that hasn't been seen in sixty-two years. The water is on average thirty feet below its full capacity and parts of the lake are bone dry. Most of the shoreline is nothing but cracked and parched wasteland. Peoples’ boat docks sit on dry land.
While it has been “officially announced” that our drought here in California is over; places like Big Bear Lake are lower than they have been in over half a century. The lakes’ low water level is unexplainable and quite disturbing. It is recorded that the Winter of 2017-18 had record snow levels up in our local San Bernardino Mountains, yet as you can see from this photograph, the water level is dramatically low. While Big Bear Lake is used as a water reservoir for San Bernardino County, Riverside County and surrounding areas, there is no clear explanation as to why the water level is so low.
While out there making this photograph, I couldn't help but feel a bit of sadness about how bad our lack of water situation is here in California.
